Cistus oil

Other odoriferous materials are derived from the leaves and young twigs of Cistus ladaniferus. Cistus oil is obtained by steam distillation solvent extraction yields cistus concrete. Cistus oil, in contrast to labdanum oil, consists mainly of monoterpene hydrocarbons. [Pg.201]

Cistus Oil (Cistus ladaniferus) A bush grown in the Mediterranean and used in the fragrance industry there, it has a eugenol content of 2.5% [40]. [Pg.129]

L. resin with an appropriate solvent (e.g., toluene) leads to the so-called L. resinoid (sometimes called L rubber resinoid or L. rubber concrete), yield ca. 50%. Precipitation of wax-containing components with alcohol leads to the so-called L. absolute, yield 80-90% this product is also prepared by direct extraction of the resin with alcohol. So-called colorless , light , or clear L. absolutes can be obtained from the normally dark colored L. absolute by dissolving it in hexane. The essential L. oil is obtained from the resin by steam distillation, yield 0.1 -0.2% this product should not be confused with Cistus oil, obtained by steam distillation of young leaves and twigs of Cistus bushes the latter is of less significance for perfumery. [Pg.343]

Composition The resinous components of L. absolute and resinoid are mainly diterpenes with the lab-dane skeleton, e.g., 8-hydmxylabdane-l5-carboxylic acid (C20H36O3, Mr 324.50) and labdane-8,l5-diol (C20H38O2, Mr 310.52), the oxidative degradation products of which contribute decisively to the odor of L. products L. oil has no main constituents but consists rather of numerous oxygen-containing monoter-penes, sesquiterpene hydrocarbons, and alcohols. In contrast cistus oil contains mainly monoterpene hydrocarbons, e. g., ca. 50% a- pinene. [Pg.343]
