Thrombocytopenia ciprofloxacin

Fatal ciprofloxacin-associated thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (28) and thrombocytopenia (29) have been reported. 

Hematologic A 30-year-old man took oral ciprofloxacin 1 g/day for 3 days for a suspected urinary tract infection and developed a rapidly fatal hemolytic anemia and severe thrombocytopenia [38 ]. The authors attributed the hemolysis and thrombocytopenia to ciprofloxacin, but a non-drug cause could not be ruled, since hematuria preceded exposure to ciprofloxacin. 

A 76-year-old man developed severe thrombocytopenia after taking ciprofloxacin on two occasions for a community-acquired pneumonia [39 ]. The authors concluded that ciprofloxacin had probably been causative, since there was improvement on dechallenge, a positive rechallenge, and detectable platelet-reactive antibodies against glycoprotein Ilb/IIIa. According to WHO causality criteria, this constellation fits the definition of a certain reaction.
