Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease monitoring

Monitor for adverse effects of 3-blockers—heart rate, blood pressure, fatigue, masking of symptoms of hypoglycemia and/or glucose intolerance (in patients with diabetes), wheezing or shortness of breath (in patients with asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease), etc.

A beta-blocker may be used in the treatment of primary open-angle glaucoma, but these drugs are contraindicated for use in persons with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and heart block (see Chapter 10). A careful history should be taken before initiating therapy to avoid potentially fatal ramifications. It is advisable to monitor patients who are taking beta-blockers (e.g., pulse, blood pressure) and to inquire about side effects at periodic follow-up examinations.

One case report of SIADH was noted on day 2 of treatment with moxifloxacin for an acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). SIADH has many causes, some of which were potentially present in this patient however, careful monitoring for adverse events is recommended in all [62 ].
