Psoralen derivatives offer a number of distinct advantages as chemical probes for chromatin structure in intact cells [1-5, 9] (1) Psoralens are readily taken up by intact cells (2) a number of psoralens have been shown to intercalate specifically into free DNA. Upon activation by UV 365 nm, intercalated psoralens form stable monoadducts and some derivatives give rise to interstrand cross-links. These cross-hnks can be visualized by electron microscopy [1]. [Pg.230]
