Chromates, hexacyano

This reaction may be adapted as a delicate test for arsenic in the following manner. The test is applicable only in the absence of chromates, hexacyano-ferrate(II) and (III) ions, which also give coloured silver salts insoluble in acetic acid.

To a solution of tetraethylenepentamine pentahydrochloride (tetren 5HC1, Aldrich) (2.24 g 6.0 mmol) dissolved in 20 mL of water is added 1.21 g of sodium hydroxide (30 mmol, 5 equiv). Weisz has applied this type of amplification reaction to the determination of phosphate, hexacyano-ferrate(II), chromate, zinc, iron, and silver, and has obtained amplification factors up to 153 in a series of cyclic processes carried out in an automated form.
