Christian witness

Despite the whimsicality of its plot construction, Focus offers a profound analysis of anti-Semitism as an instrument of economic and political power. (In this respect Focus has more in common with Carey McWilliams s Mask for Privilege than with Gentleman s Agreement.) Miller addresses the work of anti-Semitism from the standpoint of political economy through the character of Finkelstein, a Jew in Newman s neighborhood who witnesses Newman s victimization at the hands of the (mistaken) Christian Front. According to Finkelstein, the Jew is not so much the object of anti-Semitism as its mode of operation. The object of Jew-hatred, that is, is an allocation of economic and social resources...

The discontinuance of use of psychedelics for most non-western societies seemed to coincide with the arrival of European "civilizing" influence, yet stubborn traces of psychedelic use persisted widely until modern times, as witnessed by recent studies of Central and South American Amerindian tribes, and of course the widely known use of peyote by members of the Native American church. There is precious little else than can give us details about what the Israelite believed about his god and the world about him, or about the real nature of Christianity. The sparse references to one Christus or Chrestus in the works of contemporary non-Christian historians, tell us nothing about the nature of the man, and only dubiously—despite the claims often made for them—do they support his historic existence. They simply bear witness to the fact (never in dispute) that the stories of the Gospels were in circulation soon after 70 AD—after the revolt of 66 AD.
