Cholinergic and Dopaminergic Receptors in the Cat Carotid Body

Carotid body muscarinic receptors were uncovered by Hirano and associates (28) using H-quinuclidinyl benzilate ( H-QNB). However, this agent selects for all five of the muscarinic receptors. Recently we have found mRNA signal for the Ml and M2 muscarinic receptors in the carotid body of the cat (Fig. 2). The M2 receptor has also been immunocytochemically located in glomus cells.
