Early attempts to improve solid-phase synthesis were also made by Maher etal. [95, 96]. In order to dreumvent some disadvantages of crosslinked polymer supports they prqmred chloromethylated polystyrene without crosslinking but with a rdativdy high degree of substitution of 62%. The unfunctionalized polymer was soluble in boizene but the Boc-Gly-support was reported to be insolutde in DMF and chloroform. 

Phase transfer catalyzed modifications were carried out on chloromethylated polystyrenes, " on polyphosphonium or polysulfonium salts, and on poly(vinyl halides). In the case of poly(vinyl chloride) it can be very useful to eliminate labile chlorine atoms. Boileau et al used phase transfer catalysis to modify poly(vinyl chloroformate) by phenol. Many other articles on the modification of polymers were analyzed in ref. 34 and in a panel discussion on triphase catalysis. ...
