A defoliant is essentially a substance that causes rapid senescence, and there is no more effective way to do this than to increase the level of ethylene in the leaf. 2-Chloroethanephosphonic acid (. 75), which liberates ethylene in the cell, effects this and is also being used (at lower concentrations) to accelerate ripening of fruits. The production of ethylene from the methional sulfinium radical as depicted above is essentially identical to that from 2-chloroethanephosphonic acid, but with the chlorine atom replaced by the methylsulfinium function and the electrophilic function of the phosphonic acid group replaced by a carboxyal-dehyde group. 

Chloroethanephosphonic acid is used as a masked source of ethylene (a natural growth inducer in plants) to force flowering, and the ripening and abscission of fruit (Edgerton and Blanpied, 1968). 

Ethylene is a very simple plant hormone, widespread in occurrence, which promotes or retards growth according to circumstances. It is much used in commerce to force the ripening of cold-stored fruit.
