Chiral PPV

PPV, PPP, and poly(p-phenyleneethynylene) (PPE) represent three important classes of conjugated polymers, and their synthesis and physical properties have been studied extensively. Using chiral binaphthyl monomers, we have prepared optically active poly(arylenevinylenes), polyarylenes, and poly(aryleneethynylene)s as the chiral analogs of PPV, PPP, and PPE. 

Circularly polarized electroliuninescence (CPEL) has heen obtained from a single-layer device in which the emitter is a PPV derivative with chiral pendent groups (33) (97). The CPEL is due to the inherent chirality of the polymer, since polymers containing racemic side groups did not show any effect however aggregation of the polymer chains in the solid state is believed to enhance the magnitude of the effect. 

A second powerful approach are meta linkages in PPV (Scheme 42) that led also to the interruption of conjugation due to the non-coplanar arrangement of adjacent conjugated repeat units [105,106]. This concept was also applied to prepare chiral polymers using 1,1-binaphthyl units [107,108] (Scheme 41) or conjugated polymers with anthracene units [109-111].
