Microfilaments and Microtubules. There are two important classes of fibers found in the cytoplasm of many plant and animal ceUs that are characterized by nematic-like organization. These are the microfilaments and microtubules which play a central role in the determination of ceU shape, either as the dynamic element in the contractile mechanism or as the basic cytoskeleton. Microfilaments are proteinaceous bundles having diameters of 6—10 nm that are chemically similar to actin and myosin muscle ceUs. Microtubules also are formed from globular elements, but consist of hoUow tubes that are about 30 nm in diameter, uniform, and highly rigid. Both of these assemblages are found beneath the ceU membrane in a linear organization that is similar to the nematic Hquid crystal stmcture. [Pg.202]

Cross-linked PVP can also be obtained by cross-linking the preformed polymer chemically (with persulfates, hydrazine, or peroxides) or with actinic radiation (63). This approach requires a source of free radicals capable of hydrogen abstraction from one or another of the labile hydrogens attached alpha to the pyrrohdone carbonyl or lactam nitrogen. The subsequently formed PVP radical can combine with another such radical to form a cross-link or undergo side reactions such as scission or cyclization (64,65), thus ... [Pg.526]

Epidermal growths such as actinic keratosis, lentigines or thin seborrheic keratoses can all be treated effectively with 25-35% TCA peels. Thicker epidermal growths or growths involving the dermis will be more resistant to treatment such as hypertrophic actinic keratoses and thicker seborrheic keratoses and may even be resistant to a medium-depth peel. Resistant lesions many times are best treated with a combination of a medium-depth chemical peel and other modalities such as manual dermasanding or CO, laser. [Pg.62]

The fifth was a molecular biologist, who smiled sweetly and pointed out that all the others had missed the point. The frog jumps because of the biochemical properties of its muscles. The muscles are largely composed of two interdigitated filamentous proteins, actin and myosin, and they contract because the protein filaments slide past each other. This property of the actin and myosin is dependent on the amino acid composition of the two proteins, and hence on chemical, and thus on physical properties. In the last analysis, the molecular biologist insisted, following James Watson, we are all nothing but subatomic particles. [Pg.280]

There are several incidents in the text where glass has been involved as a direct cause, either because of its chemical properties (alkalinity, corrosive attack), or its physical properties (actinic transparency, or mechanical limitations under stress). Some of these incidents may be found under the entries ... [Pg.170]

Any highly cooperative chemical or physical process that serves to generate structures that then grow by linear accretion or elongation. Nucleation is an important phase in indefinite polymerization processes (e.g., actin filament and microtubule assembly). Nucleation is typically of a high kinetic order,... [Pg.515]

There are several approaches to measuring actinic fluxes and photolysis rate constants. One approach is to measure the rate of decay of a species such as N02 directly, so-called chemical actinometry (e.g. see Madronich et al., 1983). Another approach is to measure the light intensity and convert this to an actinic flux. [Pg.61]

As described earlier, measurements of actinic fluxes are made using chemical actinometry, particularly the photolysis of N02 or 03, or using flat-plate or 277 radiometers. Intercomparisons of such measurements... [Pg.75]

The input file for Example 1, exl.inp, has associated with it the RADM mechanism, called meccm.rad and a set of actinic fluxes as a function of solar zenith angles stored as zen.rad. A copy of the RADM chemical species list is found in Table 16.1. [Pg.947]

In the contractile system of skeletal muscle cells, myosin and actin are specialized to transduce the chemical energy of ATP into motion (see Fig. 5-33). ATP binds tightly but noncovalently to one conformation of myosin, holding the protein in that conformation. When myosin catalyzes the hydrolysis of its bound ATP, the ADP and Pi dissociate from the protein, allowing it to... [Pg.504]
