Bisphenol A. One mole of acetone condenses with two moles of phenol to form bisphenol A [80-05-07] which is used mainly in the production of polycarbonate and epoxy resins. Polycarbonates (qv) are high strength plastics used widely in automotive appHcations and appHances, multilayer containers, and housing appHcations. Epoxy resins (qv) are used in fiber-reinforced larninates, for encapsulating electronic components, and in advanced composites for aircraft—aerospace and automotive appHcations. Bisphenol A is also used for the production of corrosion- and chemical-resistant polyester resins, polysulfone resins, polyetherimide resins, and polyarylate resins. [Pg.99]

These resins have the highest heat resistance of any chemically resistant polyester. They are also inherently fire retardant. A noncombustible rating of 20 can be achieved, making this the safest possible polyester for stacks, hoods, fans, ducts, or wherever a fire hazard might exist. This fire retardancy is achieved by the addition of antimony trioxide. [Pg.173]

Highly durable, chemically inert, thermo-stable aromatic polyesters can be produced by interaction of polymers containing links of -oxyben-zoic acid, aromatic dioxy-compounds, for example of hydroquinone and aromatic dicarboxylic acids [40]. Thermo and chemically resistant polyesters of improved mechanical strength can be obtained by the reaction of n-oxybenzoic acid, aromatic dicarboxylic acids, aromatic dioxy-compounds and diaryl carbonates held in solid phase or in high-boiling solvents [41] at temperature 180 °C and lowered pressure, possibly in the presence of catalysts [42], Some characteristics of aromatic polyesters based on n-oxybenzoic acid are gathered in Table 7.1 [20],... [Pg.119]
