Outline an overall process flow sheet and material balance including solvent recovery and recycle. This should be done with the aid of process simulation software. In the early 1970s Kiichler and associates [K6, K7] of Farbwerke Hoechst adapted the acid Thorex process to fuel irradiated to bumups to 100,000 MWd/MT, such as are expected from the HTGR, AVR, and THTR. They made laboratory runs on spiked synthetic fuel simulating chemically high-burnup fuel. They also made hot-laboratory runs at the Kernfor-schungsanlage Jiilich on 1 kg/day of fuel irradiated to burnups up to 54,000 MWd/MT. Additionally, there is process simulation steady-state flow sheet simulators and dynamic flow sheet simulators. Steady-state flow sheet simulators have been widely used in chemical process engineering since the 1960s. Steady-state simulators describe the process as a set of modules connected by flows of material and energy between them. The modules correspond to mass and energy balances together with physical and thermodynamic data necessary for calculations. The calculations may be performed using one of two basic techniques. The sequential approach computes modules one by one, in a direction that generally follows that of the physical flows in the system (Leiviska, 1996). [Pg.63]

It is now routinely introduced in earlier chemical engineering courses, such as thermodynamics, separations, and now in chemical reaction engineering (CRE). Like Polymath.
