Chemical engineering education recommendations

The findings and recommendations outhned here and in previous chapters show that the intersection of chemistry and chemical engineering with computing and information technology is a sector that is ripe with opportunity. Important accomplishments have already been realized, and major technical progress should be expected if new and existing resources are optimized in support of research, education, and infrastructure. While this report identifies many needs and opportunities, the path forward is not yet fully defined and will require additional analysis. [Pg.58]

The American Institute of Chemists, 60 East 42nd Street, New York 17, was established in 1923 to promote the professional status and academic standards of chemists and chemical engineers. As such it is not concerned with science itself, but with the individual, and the recognition of his importance in the national life. The Institute has aided education with its recommendations for curricula and has evolved a code of ethics for its members. A gold medal is awarded annually for meritorious contributions to the science of chemistry or to the profession, and awards are also made to students. The Institute publishes monthly a journal The Chemist devoted to the aims of its programme. [Pg.183]

I cite this history including these two recent examples of attempts to insert chemistry into the thicket of materials research already densely populated by physicists, ceramists, metallurgists, and chemical and civil engineers, because they form the background for my recommendations in the following sections. It is, of course, directly relevant to the initiative in education of the American Chemical Society. First let me list good reasons for such an initiative ... [Pg.57]
