The routine recovery and disposal of old munitions discovered in the United Kingdom is undertaken by the British Army s Explosive Ordinance Disposal (EOD) teams. If there are indications that a discovered munition might contain a chemical fill, however, the standard procedure is for the EOD team dealing with the incident to contact the Chemical and Biological Defence Establishment (CBDE) at Porton Down. Except in the very rare situation where the munition is judged to be too unsafe to be moved, arrangements are made for it to be suitably over-packed and transported, by road, to the CBDE for final disposal. 

In its intellectual dimensions, the NATO ARW was co-sponsored by the Committee on Chemical Weapons Destruction Technologies of the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (lUPAC). The work of this Committee was supported importantly by the John D. and Catherine T.
