In some invertebrates, oxygen is transported in the blood by the cupric metaUoprotein haemocyanin (oxyhaemocyanin). Haemo-cyanin contains two copper atoms (Cu+) linked by three bonds with histidyl residues. One molecule of oxygen in oxyhaemocyanin forms a bridge between two atoms of Cu +. Cytochrome c oxidase is an enzyme that requires haem and copper. It catalyses the final reaction of the respiratory chain (the electron transport from the cytochrome system to an oxygen molecule) ... [Pg.439]
