Chromium(III) catalyses the cerium(IV) oxidation of primary and secondary alcohols in a mixture of H2SO4 and HC104. Kinetic results have been interpreted in terms of the formation of chromium(IV) in a reversible equilibrium, which forms a complex with the alcohol.
