Cerebral functions

The terms convulsion and seizure are often used interchangeably and basically have the same meaning. A seizure may be defined as a periodic attack of disturbed cerebral function. A seizure may also be described as an abnormal disturbance in the electrical activity in one or more areas of the brain. Seizures may be classified as partial (focal) or generalized. Each different type of seizure disorder is characterized by a specific pattern of events, as well as a different pattern of motor or sensory manifestation.

There is no doubt that cerebral lipids, and EEA-derived LC-PUFAs in particular, have significant direct and indirect actions on cerebral function. Not only does the lipid composition of neural membranes affect the function of their embedded proteins, but also many LC-PUFAs are converted to neurally active substances. There is good evidence that psychiatric illness is associated with depletion of EFAs and, crucially, that supplementation can result in clinical amelioration. Ar well as challenging traditional views of aetiology and therapeutics in psychiatry, the clinical trial data may herald a simple, safe and effective adjunct to our standard treatments for many disabling conditions.

Central to energy metaholism is the maintenance of a blood glucose concentration of about 5 mM, which is essential for normal cerebral function. Confusion and coma can result if blood glucose falls below 3mM, while serious vascular damage may occur if it exceeds 8mM for significant periods (see Table 2.1, Section 2.20).
