Ceramic tiles, classes

The basic classes of ceramic tiles, as defined by the Tile Council of America, are Wall Tiles, Glazed Floor Tiles, Unglazed Floor Tiles and Ceramic Mosaic Tile. The minerals used in the manufacture of ceramic tiles exhibit the entire range of properties and usefulness that exemplify the reasons for their use in almost all fields of ceramics. [Pg.464]

Ihe polymers of the 2-cyanoacrylic esters, more commonly known as the alkyl 2-cyanoacrylates, are hard glassy resins that exhibit excellent adhesion to a wide variety of materials. The polymers are spontaneously formed when their liquid precursors or monomers are placed between two closely fitting surfaces. Tile spontaneous polymerization of these very reactive liquids and the excellent adhesion properties of the cured resins combine to make these compounds a unique class of single-component, ambient-temperature-curing adhesive of great versatility (Table 3). The materials that can be bonded run the gamut from metals, plastics, most elastomers, fabrics, and woods to many ceramics. [Pg.18]

The traditional or conventional ceramics are generally in monolithic form. These include bricks, pottery, tiles and a variety of art objects. The advanced or high-performance monolithic ceramic materials represent a new and improved class of ceramic materials where, frequently, some sophisticated chemical processing route is used to obtain them. Generally, their characteristics are based on the high quality and purity of the raw materials used. Examples of these high-performance ceramics include oxides, nitrides, carbides of silicon, aluminium, titanium and zirconium, alumina, etc. [Pg.58]
