This chapter covers those aspects of the mechanical design of chemical plant that are of particular interest to chemical engineers. The main topic considered is the design of pressure vessels. The design of storage tanks, centrifuges and heat-exchanger tube sheets are also discussed briefly.

Mechanical Design The vertical basket centrifuge is equipped with a cylindrical basket rotating about the vertical axis. The basket shell is normally perforated and lined with filtration media consisting of filter cloth, and backing screens to provide liquid drainage paths to the basket holes. Securing the filter cloth may be by hook and loop attachment or with snap-in retainers. 

A manufacturer has recently introduced a line of centrifugal pumps which use a gear-speed increaser to drive the impeller at 20,000 rpm with an 1800 rpm motor. One of the pumps delivers a head of 4500 ft. Estimate its impeller diameter. List the most important mechanical design problems for such a pump. 

This most versatile coil planet centrifuge provides a freely adjustable coil rotation under a strong centrifugal force field produced by high-speed revolution, and yet the system does not require the use of a rotary seal. The apparatus is not yet commercially available probably due to its highly complex mechanical design (Figure 12).
