Adjunct to the diagnosis of erectile dysfunction (Caverject only) - Patients are monitored for the occurrence of an erection after an intracavernosal injection of alprostadil. Use a single dose of alprostadil that induces a rigid erection. 

Children Caverject is not indicated for use in newborns or children. However, alprostadil Prostin VR Pediatric) is used in newborns to maintain the patency of the ductus arteriosus in neonates with congenital heart defects. 

Alprostadil is commercially available as an intracavernosal injection (Caverject and Edex) and as an intraurethral insert (medicated urethral system for erection MUSE). 

PGE, (alprostadil) may be used in the treatment of impotence. Intracavemous injection of PGE, causes complete or partial erection in impotent patients who do not have disorders of the vascular system or cavernous body damage. The erection lasts for 1 to 3 hours and is sufficient for sexual intercourse. PGE, is more effective than papaverine. The agent is available as a sterile powder that is reconstituted with water for infections (Caverject).
