An additional substrate molecule interacts with the ES complex at high substrate concentration to form the unproductive complex ESI, or in this case ESS. With the respective mass balances for the ideal reactors the integral rate laws of Eqs. (5.19) and (5.20) are obtained. 

To ameliorate the effects of substrate inhibition, running the reactor in semi-batch mode, i.e., with continuous feeding of substrate, is always an option.
