In 1998, the FDA approved fibrin sealant for three specific indications. These include hemostasis at the time of cardiac surgical operations [8] (Fig. 2) as well as at the time of operative procedures to treat splenic trauma. The application of the fibrin sealant which consists of normal biologic components in the body s clotting cascade creates a localized clot which further enhances inherent clotting ability. Although approved for these specific hemostatic indications only, fibrin sealant is useful as a hemostat in a wide variety of off-label clinical situations as well [9,10]. These include such applications as hemostasis for liver trauma or resection [11], vascular anastomoses [12], tonsillectomy [13], peripheral joint replacement [14], dental extractions [15], and bum debridement [16]. 

A more recent application of the Knoevenagel reaction is its use in domino reactions. The term domino reaction is used for two or more subsequent transformations, where the next reaction step is based on the functionality generated in the preceding step. Such reactions are also called tandem reactions or cascade reactions.

In another interesting application of this procedure, the acid-mediated cascade cyclization of (3-diketone diepoxide 73 involves the participation not only of the two oxirane rings and of the secondary alcoholic group, but also of one of the two carbonyl groups. In this way, besides the two adjacent C and D THF rings, the simultaneous construction of the spiroketal function between the B and C rings of etheromycin is obtained (compound 74, in a 70 30 mixture with 12 -epi compound Scheme 8.19) [37]. 

Nonetheless, a wide variety of potential methods are available to achieve the goal of nanoencapsulation for the purpose of facilitating the use of two or more incompatible catalysts in cascade reactions. The many multistep reactions that are of importance in the fine chemicals industry are prime targets for the application of the principles of nanoencapsulation and, therefore, of green chemistry.
