Caryophyllane sesquiterpenes

A very unusual nor-caryophyllane sesquiterpene with a carbon skeleton of type 2 (see Figure 20.25) was identified in a Hainan soft coral of the genus Sinularia (Li, Huang, and Guo, 2008b). 

Several sesquiterpene skeletons include cyclobutane rings [78]. Some representative examples are summarized in Sch. 20. Many sesquiterpene lactones are toxic to fish (Pieman, 1986a). Buddlejin A, B, and C (115,116, and 117) possess a caryophyllane skeleton and are piscicidal (Fig. 21.24). These compounds are found in Buddleja davidii (Buddlejaceae)...

Riunphellolides A-F are a series of sesquiterpene and norsesquiterpene alcohols with the carbon skeleton of caryophyllane. All of them originate from the Formosan gorgonian Rumphella antipathies, both from Taiwan (Sung et al., 2007b).
