Pigman was a recipient of the C. S. Hudson Award in 1959, and received the Medal of the French Biological Society in 1963, and the Medal of the University of Milan in 1964. From 1956 to 1960, he presided over the Committee on Social Aspects of Science of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and also served a term as Chairman of the Division of Carbohydrate Chemistry of the American Chemical Society. His published works number well over three hundred articles. He fondly talked about those whose scientific interests he shared David Aminoff, Don M. Carlson, Zacharias Dische, Alfred Gottschalk, W. Z. Hassid, Roger W. Jeanloz, N. K. Kochetkov, and many others. [Pg.4]

During 1995-1997, the information from past studies, almost 5000 field trials, new surveys of growers, and a weed control model developed by Dr. David Bridges (Bridges, 1998) were used to provide USEPA with estimates of the economic benefits of triazine and atrazine on all crops labeled with these products in the United States. A summary of the economic and biological models and some of the components are available (Bridges, 1998 Carlson, 1998). [Pg.158]

This model has come to dominate our understanding of chemical communication in Diptera, in particular those signals involved in courtship and mating. In fact, most dipteran species do not fit the Musca model. Although some species, like houseflies, show a marked qualitative sexual dimorphism, many species express only quantitative variation for compounds shared by both sexes (Bartelt et al., 1986 Jallon and David, 1987 Toolson and Kuper-Simbron, 1989 Byrne et al., 1995), while in other species adults of both sexes appear to be virtually identical (Stoffolano et al., 1997 Howard et al., 2003). Furthermore, there are relatively few examples of the kind of rigorous demonstration of a pheromonal role for CHCs that was established in Musca (e.g. Carlson et al., 1984 Adams and Holt, 1987 Ferveur and Sureau, 1996 Lacaille et al., 2007). [Pg.325]

The author thanks Rick Carlson for the invitation to contribute to this chapter, and for his patience and encouragement during the process. A review by David BeU substantially improved the content and readability of the chapter, in part by pointing out some biases the author had not even recognized. Comments by Rick Carlson were very helpful as well. [Pg.1051]

The authors thank David Rubie, Richard Carlson, and Willem van Westrenen for their thoughtful, constructive, and meticulous reviews. [Pg.1239]

The Editors are very grateful for help in the preparation of this work given freely by a large number of people, in particular the anonymous referees for each contribution, and also especially Sandy Carlson (University of Davis, California), Bernard Cohen (Glasgow University), David Harper (University of Copenhagen) and Lloyd Peck (British Antarctic Survey) for assistance in the preliminary editing. [Pg.455]
