After many years of work experience, no one will have a perfect work record. Everyone s career hits the occasional bump in the road. In particular, there will often be gaps in the work record for the times that the professional was unemployed or was trying to land new contracts. These gaps can be filled with information to do with background work such as the preparation of seminars or professional papers, or with time spent on continuing education. 

An academy established in 1999 by the American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE) to offer career support to ASSE members and the profession. Its program includes an annual Professional Development Conference and Exposition, workshops and seminars offered throughout the United States, and professional networking. Each of these professional organizations has within its mission to foster the engineering careers of the constituency that it represents. However, membership is not typically limited to just that constituency. For instance WTS (the Women s Transportation Seminar) is dedicated to the professional advancement of females in transportation, but welcomes male members.

Early in October 1961 I left behind me Switzerland, a short-lived career in medicine, a somewhat longer one in organic chemistry and plun d into the turbulent field of molecular biology. The decision to do so dated back to a seminar by Severn Ochoa which I had heard in Zurich several years earlier. Captivated by what was to me a new and exciting science and attracted by the speaker s enthusiasm, I approached Ochoa after his talk and on an impulse requested to join him after completing my degree. Ochoa—apparently also on an impulse— immediately accepted me.
