In the above analysis, the pump frequency (cOp) and the Stokes frequency (coj have been assumed to be ideally monochromatic, which is applicable when each vibration-rotation line is scanned. In a broadband CARS system as described here the Stokes (dye) laser has a broad spectral profile so that the multiplexed CARS spectral profile of the probed species, is generated with each laser pulse.

CAR can be observed microscopically on double-sided PWBs using back lighting (Rig. 12). Subsequent scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (SEM/EDS) analysis shows that it contains copper and chloride (Fig. 13). A CAR sample was extracted and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analysis was used to obtain electron diffraction data. Analysis of these results identify CAR as atacamite, Cu2(OH)3Cl (Ref 24). In standard CARS experiments, pump and probe beams are provided by the same laser source, so that p = pj = p. When the beat frequency cOp — co (Figure 14.2a) matches the frequency of a Raman-active molecular vibration and phase-matching condition is achieved, the resonant oscillators are coherently driven by the excitation fields, generating a strong anti-Stokes signal at...
