Canti studies

X-Ray diffraction studies of complexes of 2,9-dimethyl-1,10-phenanthroline (cf. e.g. Preston and Kennard33 and Power34) and 2,4,7,9-tetramethyl-l,10-phenanthroline (e.g., Canty and Gatehouse35) and the overcrowded molecule, l,10-dichloro-3,8-dimethyl-4,7-phenanthroline,36 have also been determined.

Since the first X-ray crystal structure of a palladium(IV) complex was published by Canty [29, 30], a number of groups have undertaken the study of these relatively uncommon intermediates. In an effort to elucidate the role of palladium(IV) and palladium(II) intermediates in the reaction mechanism, Catellani prepared a number of isolable palladacycle complexes in both the (II) and (IV) oxidation states using 1,10-phenanthroline as the ligand (Scheme 8) [31]. Carbon-heteroatom bond-forming reductive elimination from transient intermediates has been proposed as the product release step of a variety of important Pd-catalyzed transformations, including arene and alkane C-H bond functionahza-tion [1,2], ally lie acetoxylation [3], alkene borylation [4], and olefin difunctionalization [5]. Over the past 25 years, a variety of Pd " model complexes have been synthesized to study reductive elimination reactions at Pd centers. For instance, in 1986, Canty reported the first example of a crystallographically characterized organometallic Pd complex, /ac-[(bpy)Pd (CH3)3(l)] (bpy = 2,2 -bipyridine) (1).
