Flucytosine 4.23) (5-fluorocytosine, Ancobon ) has proved clinically successful as an orally active fungicide for treating such systemic diseases as candidosis and cryptococcal meningitis (Bennett, 1977). Its selectivity depends on the fact that mammals secrete it unchanged (just as they do cytosine), whereas fungi convert it to 5-fluorouracil and then elaborate this to its cytostatic nucleotide. 

Many fungi are able to infect man, provoking common superficial mycoses or subcutaneous and systemic infections. Dermatophytoses, candidosis and pityriasis versicolor are the most common cutaneous mycoses systemic mycoses such as cryptococcosis are also of prime importance in some parts of the world. In the following sections, we refer only to mycotic infections that are provoked or significantly worsened by the work environment. 

Pyrrolnitrin was investigated in mice for its activity against systemic mycotic infections.37 The drug was administered subcutaneously in multiple doses. Some activity was observed in candidosis and cryptococcosis, but not in blastomycosis and histoplasmosis. Three new bromo analogs of pyrrolnitrin were detected in fermentations of Pseudomonas pyrrolnitrica when the medium was supplemented with NH4Br.
