Calculations Relative to Safety Instrumented Systems at TOTAL

Methods and Calculations Relative to Safety Instrumented Systems at TOTAL [Pg.307]

In the context of protection of its facilities, TOTAL follows the conventional standards and practices of the oil industiy for the design of safety equipment. Regarding the control of risk related to overpressure, overheating, excessive flow, corrosive fluids, etc., the standards require the establishment of safe equipment capable of withstanding the worst conditions of production and protection systems consistent with international standards (e.g. ISO 10418) or sectoral (e.g. API RP 14C) recommendations which synthesize the know-how accumulated over time in this profession to keep risks at a level acceptable to the personnel, the public, and the environment. [Pg.307]

Safety of Computer Architectures Edited by Jean-Louis Boulanger [Pg.307]

Since the 1970s, TOTAL has developed and implemented a very poweifiil range of methods and tools based on traditional approaches. They ate nsed on a daily basis to perform onr lehability analysis. However, in recent years international standards such as the lEC 61508 [lEC 00] and lEC 61511 [lEC 03] have proposed a new concept of safety integrity level (SIL) required to achieve a level of acceptable risk. They are progressively imposed on the design of SlSs and as their scope naturally concern HIPS, their implementation carmot be ignored. Much work was necessary to establish hnks between these two approaches and identify their similarities and differences. [Pg.308]
