A diet deficient in niacin (as well as byptophan) leads to glossitis of the tongue, dermatitis, weight loss, diarrhea, depression and dementia. 

From L-tiyptophan, the serotonin symthesis pathway also begins. Serotonin is S-hydroxyrtryrptamine. It is derived from L-fryptophan, which at first is simply hydroxylated to 5-hydroxy-L-byptophan and subsequently to the serotonin (Figure 2.19). Structurally, serotonin is also a 5-HT monoamine neurotransmitter. It is found in many cellular complexes, such as the central nervous system, the peripheral nervous system, and the cardiovascular system, but it also appears in blood cells. 

Alkaloids derived from nicotinic acid contain a p5rridine nucleus. Nicotinic acid itself is synthesized from L-byptophan via A-formylkynurenine, L-kynurenine, 3-hydroxykynurenine, 3-hydroxyanthraniUc acid, and quinolinic acid.
