Ring closure of substituted 3-(2-furyl)butyric acids and 3-(3-furyl)-butyric acids (or their chlorides) should lead to 4,5,6,7-tetrahydro-benzofuran-4(or 7)-ones. The former should give the corresponding 4-hydroxybenzofurans or benzofurans (by reduction and dehydrogenation). While the ring closure of 3-(5-methyl-2-furyl)butyryl chloride (330, R = Me) actually affords 331 (R = Me 77% yield),740 the... [Pg.445]

Fit a 100-ml two-necked flask with a dropping funnel and a reflux condenser connected at the top to a gas absorption trap (Fig. 2.61). Place 36g (21.5ml, 0.3 mol) of redistilled thionyl chloride in the flask and 22 g (23 ml, 0.25 mol) of butyric acid in the separatory funnel. Heat the flask gently on a water bath, and add the butyric acid during the course of 30-40 minutes (1). When all the acid has been introduced, heat on a water bath for 30 minutes. Rearrange the apparatus and distil collect the crude acid chloride boiling between 70 and 110°C. Finally, redistil from a flask provided with a short fractionating column and collect the butyryl chloride at 100-101 °C. The yield is 23 g (86%). [Pg.693]

Ethoxyphenyl Tellurium Trichloride3 To a vigorously boiling suspension of 9.0 g (30 mmol) 4-ethoxybeiizcne tellurinyl chloride in 50 ml anhydrous carbon tetrachloride is added a solution of 6.4 g (60 mmol) butyryl chloride in 5 ml carbon tetrachloride. The refluxing mixture is stirred for 1 h. On cooling, 4-ethoxypheny] tellurium trichloride precipitates. The precipitate is collected by filtration and recrystallized from acetic acid. The filtrate is stripped of the solvent and the residue distilled at atmospheric pressure. Butyric anhydride boiled at 198° yield 89%. [Pg.318]

Phthalyl chloride, CjH4(COCl)j, converts butyric acid to butyryl chloride (92%) and maleic anhydride to fumaryl chloride (95%). [Pg.726]

The submitters report that ethyl wo-butyryl-wo-butyrate (ethyl a,a,7,7-tetramethylacetoacetate) may be prepared in a similar manner, using im-butyryl chloride instead of benzoyl chloride. The yield of this ester, b.p. 94.5-95.5° at 18 mm., is about 55 per cent of the theoretical. [Pg.23]
