Butanenitrile, 2-hydroxy

Hydroxy-2-(trifluoromethyl)butanenitrile (8 g, 52 mmol) was added slowly drop-wise to concentrated H2SO4 (15.3 g). The mixture was heated to 115 °C for 15 min, cooled to 8 °C and 22 g of water added. Diethyl ether (50 mL) was then added, and the organic phase was washed with water (25.0 mL), saturated aqueous NaHCOs (25.0 mL), and again with water (25.0 mL). The diethyl ether phase was dried over Na2SO4, filtered, and evaporated. The resulting oil was treated with n-hexane, and the resulting amide (4.27 g, 48%) was collected by filtration.
