Bundy, Harvey

Stimson allowed one of his trusted aides, Harvey H. Bundy, a Boston lawyer, father of William P. and McGeorge, at least to begin formulating a membership roster and list of duties for such a committee. But he did not yet know even in broad outline what basic policy to recommend. 

Before Bohr left, late in June, he attempted one last tLne to see a high official of the United States government—Stimson— Harvey Bundy sending in a message on June 18 to the Secretary Do you want to try and work in a meeting with Professor Bohr, the Dane, before you get away this week ... 

Well, Stimson remarked to Harvey Bundy with relief, I have been responsible for spending two billions of dollars on this atomic venture. Now that it is successful I shall not be sent to prison in Fort Leavenworth. Happily the Secretary of War carried the cable to Truman and Byrnes, just returned to Potsdam from Berlin.

These pointed questions, raised by the two civilians who were principally responsible for marshaling the scientific skills of the nation for World War II, deserved serious study. Probably the questions were asked without full knowledge of the numerous measures taken by the War Department during 1942 to improve the capacity of the Army for waging gas warfare. But they served as the occasion for a hasty War Department survey of what had been accomplished under the Porter proposals. Harvey Bundy, special assistant to Secretary Stimson, incorporated the inquiries in a memorandum to Mr. Stimson on 21 December. Three days later it was in General Porter s hands for comment and recommendation." ... 

In July 1S>41, Harvey H. Bundy, Special Assistant to the Secretary of War, called a meeting of representatives of the Office of Scientific Research and Development (OSRD), The Surgeon General, the CWS, and Army G-2, to discuss means for co-ordinating work in BW. As a result of this meeting the OSRD recommended to the Secretary of War that the National Academy of Sciences investigate the possibilities of BW. ... 

The formation of complex mixed-layer minerals by hydrothermal processes has been demonstrated by Bundy and Murray [1957], Harvey and Beck [1960], and Sudo and Hayashi [1955]. The first-mentioned investigators find all principal combinations of mixed layering between illite-montmorillonite, chlorite, and vermiculite in hydrothermally altered volcanic tertiary rocks. Ostrom [1960] found a triple interlayer mixture produced by the action of hot springs in Hector County, California. Regular interstratifications of chlorite and vermiculite, or chlorite and montmorillonite, are relatively common. They have been found, for instance, as the result of hydrothermal alteration of andesitic rocks by Harvey and Beck [1960], and also as a result of alteration of basalt by Earley and Milne [1955]. A saponite-swelling chlorite interstratification has been found as a result of alteration of lizardite rocks in Italy by Veniale [1962] and Veniale and van der Marel [1963].
