Bubble isolated

Capillary Force Valves, Fig. 9 A volume of 25 pL is isolated by the creation of two new liquid-air interfaces, through the use of two thermal actuators. Two air bubbles isolate the separated volume from the rest of the liquid in the main channel [6]... [Pg.293]

I look at as impossible that the gas portions which come from the interior of the mixture above can form on its surface film segments of a sphere, and are able to continue to raise the liquid film so as to complete spherical film bubbles isolated in the air indeed, the imprisoned gas has obviously not nearly enough mass so that the inertia of its upward movement overcomes the capillary pressure exerted by the convex film which it determines on the surface of the mixture. I did not repeat the experiment of Minary and Lord, and consequently I will not venture any explanation. This experiment does not appear to me without danger of the acid droplets being able to be projected in the eyes of the observer it is necessary, I think, to look through a screen of glass. [Pg.188]

A solution of 4% aq. H2SO4, (301) was heated to 50"C over 30-60 min. Nitrogen was bubbled through the solution during this time. 4-(Cyano-methyl)phenylhydrazine hydrochloride (1080g, 4.77 mol) was added as a solid to the heated mixture. After it had dissolved, A,A-dimethyl-4,4-dimethoxy-butanamine (965 g, 5.98 mol) was added over a period of 30 min. The mixture was then heated at reflux for 2 h. The reaction mixture was cooled and diluted with portions of 30%o aq. NH4OH (21 total) over 0.5 h at a rate to maintain the temperature at 25-30°C. The product was then extracted into isopropyl acetate (3 x 101). The solution was concentrated to 31 which led to a precipitate which was isolated by filtration and washed with cold isopropyl acetate to give 827.4 g (76%) of product. [Pg.63]

Since 1970, new analytical techniques, eg, ion chromatography, have been developed, and others, eg, atomic absorption and emission, have been improved (1—5). Detection limits for many chemicals have been dramatically lowered. Many wet chemical methods have been automated and are controlled by microprocessors which allow greater data output in a shorter time. Perhaps the best known continuous-flow analy2er for water analysis is the Autoanaly2er system manufactured by Technicon Instmments Corp. (Tarrytown, N.Y.) (6). Isolation of samples is maintained by pumping air bubbles into the flow line. Recently, flow-injection analysis has also become popular, and a theoretical comparison of it with the segmented flow analy2er has been made (7—9). [Pg.230]

The first flow pattern zone corresponds to the isolated bubble (IB) regime where the bubble generation rate is much higher than the coalescence rate. It includes both bubbly flow and/or slug flows and is present up to the onset of coalescence process domination. The second zone is the coalescing bubble (CB) regime, which is... [Pg.47]

Flow patterns isolated bubble regime (IB), coalescing bubble regime (CB), annular (completely coalesced) regime (A), post-dryout regime (PD). Reprinted from Thome et al. (2006) with permission... Of all the elements, phosphorus is the only one that was first isolated from a human source. The element was extracted from human urine in 1669 using an unsavory process After a sample of urine was allowed to stand for several days, the putrefied liquid was boiled until only a paste remained. Further heating of the paste at high temperature produced a gas that condensed to a waxy white solid when the vapor was bubbled into water. It wasn t until 1779 that phosphorus was discovered in mineral form, as a component of phosphate minerals. [Pg.1526]
