Bubble girl

The first gene therapy trial was conducted in September 1990. A 4-year-old girl with SCID (an inherited immune disorder disease, otherwise known as the bubble boy syndrome) was treated in Cleveland, Ohio. She is doing well some 10 years after the treatment. A second girl with the same disorder underwent gene therapy and she too continues to do well. [Pg.126]

The ait inside the car has more inertia than the helium in the helium balloon. As the car starts forward, the greater inertia of the air causes it to pitch backwards, much like the girl s head. As this air holds to the back of the car, the lighter helium balloon moves forward. A similar effect can be seen when sliding a botde of water on its side across a table. As you accelerate die bottle forward, the water inside the bottle has an inertia that holds it back. Any bubble of air within the bottle thus runs forward in the direction that the bottle was pushed. [Pg.702]

The Russian peasant of his day never heard of the Periodic Table, but he remembered Dmitri Mendel eft for another reason. One day, to photograph a solar eclipse, he shot into the air in a balloon, flew on a bubble and pierced the sky. And to every boy and girl of the Soviet Union today Mendel eff is a national hero. [Pg.139]

A 2-month-old girl with bronchopneumonia was given a micropump intravenous injection of 4 ml Reduning in 50 ml of 10% dextrose. After about 1 hour she developed oozing and swelling at the puncture site and the local site was dark red with a 1-cm bubble. The infusion was stopped and the skin healed without scars after local wound care for 2 weeks. [Pg.772]
