Refractive Index. The refractometric value of sugar solutions is used as a rapid method for the approximate determination of the soHds content (also known as dry substance), because it is assumed that the nonsugars present have a similar influence on the refractive index as sucrose. Measurement is usually carried out on a Brix refractometer, which is graduated in percentage of sucrose on a wt/wt basis (g sucrose/100 g solution) according to ICUMSA tables of refractive index at 20.0°C and 589 nm. Tables are available that give mass fraction corrections to refractometric values at temperatures different from 20°C. 

The value 11.5 °Brix is used in the above equation as an example. The °Brix used should correspond to the juice of the product (Table G2.2.1). One needs to correct for °Brix only when reporting results as standard °Brix. 

EXAMPLE A sugar solution has the sp. gr. 1-1832 at 17 5°. The nearest value in the table, 1-18305, corresponds with 40-7° Brix or 40-7% by weight of gugar, and interpolation shows the exact concentration to be 40-73%. 

There are various software tools commercially available that can be used to estimate organ and effective dose values for a variety of CT protocols and scanners from measured CTDI values (Brix et al. 2004 Stamm et al., VAMP). The user should make sure, however, to employ software versions that cover the special aspects of MSCT discussed in the following. Table 4.5 summarizes representative dose values determined in a nationwide survey in Germany for the most common tyes of CT examinations (Brix et al. 2003). 

Specifications for fruit juice products usually include a value for soluble solids expressed as degrees Brix. This figure is based on the relationship between the specific gravity of the product and the percentage of dissolved solids it contains.
