Machine briquetting

The hot reduced fines are pneumatically transported to an atmospheric pressure hoi ding dmm from which they are fed to the briquetting machines. The hot briquettes are separated, cooled on a circular grate, and deUvered to an outdoor storage pile.

The reciprocating movement of the piston(s) and the relatively small volume of the die cavity severely restrict the capacity of this type of equipment even if modern, multistation, rotary tabletting presses are considered. With the production of larger pieces in, for example, hydraulic presses or roller briquetting machines, the accuracy in weight, shape, and dimensions is no longer obtained.

The roll-type briquet machine , roller press, or Belgian press was developed in Europe during the second half of the last century. The objective of its invention was to find an economic method for the agglomeration of coal fines.

Due to leakage at the sides of the rollers (see Section 4.2.2.4.7, Sealing the roll nip ) and, in the case of roll-type briquetting machines, the flashing or webs around the briquettes, the actual throughput of and the feed to roller presses are somewhat higher (approximately 5-15% see Section 4.2.2.4.7). 

Another criterion for selection of the roller diameter, particularly of briquetting machines, is the release mechanism from the pockets (see Section 4.2.2.4.7). 

Scale-up considerations Above, formulae and graphs were presented to determine the main dimensions and parameters of roller presses. In addition, there are some simple relationships between the roll diameter D, force or pressure p, and gap width hp, which can be applied for scaling up or down. An equivalent gap width may be calculated for briquetting machines and used as an approximation. 

Roll gap. The gap between the rollers of briquetting machines must be adjusted such that under no-load conditions (no feed to the rolls) the surfaces are not touching. The lack of roundness, which increases with roller diameter, must be taken into consideration. Because of the normally high forces exerted by the pressurizing system and the brittleness of the wear-resistant roll material, the roller surfaces could be damaged if they were allowed to ride...
