The first evidence for hypersonic phononic crystal effects was observed in porous silicon superlattices using Brillouin light-scattering experiments (Parsons and Andrews 2009). Comparison between experiment and theory using the Rytov model indicated that the bulk longitudinal phonon branch had been folded. One of the samples exhibited a spectrum consistent with a bandgap of 3.3 GHz for a first gap located at 13.4 GHz. [Pg.750]

The experiments were ctirried out using Brillouin light scattering (BLS) and ellipsometry [35,37]. (b) Films on the native oxide covered silicon surface (eUipsometry measurements) [31]. Brillouin light scattering [73-75]. The electrical field of the photons couples to the spin wave via spin-orbit interachon in this case. The possible wave vector transfer paraUel to the surface is, however, limited by the wave vector of the incident hght, which is of the order of 10 A. Thus, in this method, only modes with a very long wavelength compared to the lattice constant are excited. [Pg.252]
