Brilliant Yellow Paper.—Used as an indicator for alkalis. Turned red by alkalis and by alkali carbonates and ammonia.

The Soda Lime Test. In a 10 x 75-mm test tube, mix about 50 mg of soda lime and 50 mg of Mn02- Add 1 drop of a liquid unknown or about 10 mg of a solid unknown. Place over the mouth of the tube a moist strip of Brilliant Yellow paper (moist, red litmus paper is an alternative). Using a test tube holder, hold the tube at an indine pointing away from you and others) and heat the contents gently at first and then quite strongly. Nitrogen-containing compounds will usually evolve ammonia. 

The camphorquinone can be purified in either of two ways, (i) To save time, the drained but still damp material can be recrystallised from water containing 10% of acetic acid, the hot filtered solution being cooled and vigorously stirred. The quinone separates as brilliant yellow crystals (yield, 2 5 g.), m.p. 192-194 , increased to 196-197 by a second reciystal-lisation. (ii) The crude camphorquinone can be dried in a vacuum desiccator (weight of dry quinone, 5 g.), and then recrystallised from petroleum (b.p. 100-120 ), the hot solution being filtered through a fluted paper in a pre-heated funnel. The quinone separates in beautiful crystals, m.p. 196-197 , 2 8 g. 

This styryl dye 35 has very high color strength and dyes paper in brilliant yellow shades. 

For staining, slides are covered with Coomassie Brilliant Blue R solution while wet and rinsed with water 5 min later. Dried surfaces were placed face down on yellow paper for observation.
