USE OF BREATH MONITORING TO ASSESS EXPOSURES TO VOLATILE ORGANIC SOLVENTS... 

End-exhaled air is beeoming the standard for breath monitoring. Of the 36 chemicals with established BEIs, end-exhaled air is reeommended for 6, while earlier BEIs recommending mixed-exhaled air have been withdrawn. Beyond the regulatory arena, however, mixed-exhaled air eontinues to be used with satisfaetory results. 

Breath monitoring maybe used to assess exposures to solvents either qualitatively or quantitatively. Qualitative information may be useful when exposure to a number of solvents is suspeeted. For qualitative purposes, eiflier mixed-exhaled or end-exhaled air samples may be used. Provided that flie sample collection and the analytical techniques are appropriate, a list of solvents may be thus identified and quantitative measurements planned.
