Break the Job Down into Steps

The supervisor or safety official should first observe the job to be evaluated and then involve at least one worker who normally performs the job. Workers assisting in this process should understand the purpose of the JSA. Using the JSA worksheet, list the activities of a job that must be accomplished in their normal order of occurrence. Usually, three to four words are sufficient to describe each job step. The first word is generally an action or do word. Avoid making the mistake of making the job breakdown too detailed or too broad. If you have more than 15 steps, the job should be broken down into more than one JSA. Mutual agreement between the initiator of the JSA and the employee assisting should be accomplished.
