An example is shown in the Br0nsted-type correlation of Figure 3, which shows rate constants for the reactions of substituted phenoxide and alkoxide ions with p-nitrophenyl thioacetate (25). Although considerable scatter of the rate constants for reactions of alkoxide ions occurs, a definite decrease in the slope for basic ions compared with those for less basic phenolate ions is evident. The slope of the correlation is 0.68 for the pheno-late ions, and a line is drawn with a slope of 0.17 through points for alkoxide ions of similar geometric structure.
