Boyles Law Volume and Pressure

The relationships between gas properties—such as the relationship between pressure and volume— are described by gas laws. These laws show how a change in one of these properties affects one or more of the others. The relationship between volume and pressure was discovered by Robert Boyle (1627-1691) and is called Boyle s law. [Pg.366]

I Boyle s law assumes constant temperature and a constant number of gas particles. [Pg.366]

Divers must ascend slowly and breathe continuously, allowing the regulator to bring the air pressure in their limgs back to 1 atm by the time they reach the surface. [Pg.368]

Boyle s law can be used to calculate the volume of a gas following a pressure change or the pressure of a gas following a volume change as long as the temperature and the amount of gas remain constant. For these calculations, we write Boyle s law in a slightly different way. [Pg.368]

This relationship is true because if the pressure increases, the volume decreases, but the product P X y is always equal to the same constant. For two different sets of conditions, we can say that [Pg.368]

This equation is another statement of Boyle s Law — and it s really a more useful one, because you normally deal with changes in pressure and volume. [Pg.163]

If you know three of the preceding quantities, you can calculate the fourth one. For excimple, suppose that you have 5.00 liters of a gas at 1.00 atm pressure, and then you decrease the volume to 2.00 liters. What s the new pressure Use the formula. Substitute 1.00 atm for Pj, 5.00 liters for Kj, and 2.00 liters for V, and then solve for P  [Pg.163]

The answer makes sense you decreased the volume, and the pressure increased, which is exactly what Boyle s law says. [Pg.164]
