Boron compounds structure

The melting and boiling points of the aluminium halides, in contrast to the boron compounds, are irregular. It might reasonably be expected that aluminium, being a more metallic element than boron, would form an ionic fluoride and indeed the fact that it remains solid until 1564 K. when it sublimes, would tend to confirm this, although it should not be concluded that the fluoride is, therefore, wholly ionic. The crystal structure is such that each aluminium has a coordination number of six, being surrounded by six fluoride ions. [Pg.153]

Another type of anion, confined for practical purposes to boron compounds, has no unshared electrons at the anionic site, and must be thought of as being formed by addition of hydride to a boron atom (or other atom with an incomplete valence shell). Such structures were not anticipated at the time general heterocyclic nomenclature was developed, and they are only recently being fitted into systematic nomenclature (lUPAC Provisional Recommendation 83.2). The reaction of 1 with the boron trihalides BC13 and BBr3 turned out to be even more complex. A quite new type of antibiotic and one of the few naturally-occurring boron compounds is boromycin (86). Hydrolytic cleavage of D-valine with the M(7) hydroxides gave caesium and rubidium salts of this antibiotic, and crystal structure analysis established the formula as (XIIT). The rubidium ion is irregularly coordinated by eight oxygen atoms. Experiments with models showed that the cation site would be the natural place for the—NH3+ end of the D-valine residue, and the whole structure raises the possibility that transport of larger alkali metals is related to the N-ends of peptides and proteins. [Pg.96]

Boron compounds contain two isotopes B10 and B11 of natural abundances 19% and 81%, respectively. Although both these isotopes possess magnetic moments, the Bn nucleus is better suited to the high resolution experiment because of its (1) greater natural abundance, (2) smaller quadrupole moment, and (3) larger nuclear moment. Because of the broad range of structures possible in boron compounds, particularly the hydrides, there has been considerable NMR work done in this field to confirm previously proposed structures and in a few cases to first establish geometry of a compound.
