Pesticides are chemical or biological substances intended to control weeds, insects, fungi, rodents, bacteria, and other pests. They protect food crops and livestock, control household pests, promote agricultural productivity, and protect public health. The importance of pesticides to modern society can be summarized by a statement made by Norman E. Borlaug, the 1970 Nobel Peace Prize winner Let s get our priorities in perspective. We must feed ourselves and protect ourselves against the health hazards of the world. To do that, we must have agricultural chemicals. Without them, the world population will starve [1]. [Pg.499]

Up to that point, safflower seed production had been on a continued upward spiral in the United States, which carried through to 1963. Safflower oil had been price competitive with soybean oil, particularly in the western United States and Japan, since soybean oil produced in the Midwest was at a freight disadvantage. The introduction into California of new varieties of wheat developed by the Borlaug program in Mexico allowed California farmers to achieve increasingly better wheat yields. In the 1950s, safflower was easily able to compete with wheat or barley as a rotation crop for California s rice or cotton farmers, but once wheat yields increased and safflower yields remained constant, safflower seed prices (and consequently oil prices) were forced to rise to compete for the farmer s favor. [Pg.1133]

Not all accepted that bird reproduction toxicity was a serious problem and that DDT should be banned. In October 1971 Nature had a comment from the Nobel Peace Price winner Norman E. Borlaug that symbolized the green revolution. [Pg.244]

An impassioned plea on behalf of DDT was delivered in Washington last week by Norman E. Borlaug, recipient of the 1970 Nobel Peace Prize for his work on high yield wheat strains. Borlaug, who testified in a public hearing on the cancellation order imposed on the pesticide by the Environmental Protection Agency, said at a press conference later ... [Pg.244]
