These materials show relatively high solubility. 

Carbides are easily oxidized thus, the composition of the external layer is often different from the bulk composition. In a few studies, the problem of oxidation has been taken into account for example, the external oxidized layer was removed, and/or the experiments were carried out under controlled redox conditions.
