This reaction provides a useful way of introducing a double bond next to a carbonyl group. Here it is in a synthesis by Barry Trost of the Queen Bee Substance (the compound fed by the workers to those bee larvae destined to become queens). The compound is also a pheromone of the termite and is used to trap these destructive pests. Trost started with the monoester of a dicarboxylic acid, which he converted to a methyl ketone by reacting the acyl chloride with a cuprate. The ketone was then protected as a dioxolane derivative to prevent it enolizing, and the sulfur was introduced by reacting the enolate of the ester with the sulfur electrophile MeSSMe.

It is probably formed by electron-loss from the tyrosine side-group, followed by proton loss, since it is found in redox enzymes such as ribonucleotide reductase, which catalyses the conversion of ribonucleotides into deoxyribonu-cleotides. In this enzyme the tyrosyl is said to be stabilized by an adjacent binuclear iron unit, but the mode of stabilization is not clear, and the ESR and ENDOR spectra of the radical are not significantly perturbed, as would have been expected if any direct bonding were involved.

For instance, Romero-Rossi and Stone (75) who studied the CO oxidation in the presence of ZnO, have shown CO not to be chemisorbed in the dark, whereas under the influence of ultraviolet light, CO forms a strong bond with the surface by capturing the created positive hole. They propose a reaction mechanism where one of the steps is the recombination COads" + Oada —>COa in this hypothesis the chemisorbed reactants behave like recombination centers for the excess free carriers. These authors have also observed that the irradiation does not exert any influence upon the catalytic activity of certain zinc oxides which contain a great excess of interstitial zinc atoms. They explain this fact, which has been experimentally confirmed by Barry and Roberts 20), by admitting a competition between CO molecules and interstitial zinc atoms, for the capture of the positive holes.
