Birefringence dispersion

In contrast, needle-type boehmite particles were covered with silica by decomposition of sodium silicate to produce isotropic birefringent dispersions (I48). [Pg.31]

Circular dicliroism has been a useful servant to tire biophysical chemist since it allows tire non-invasive detennination of secondary stmcture (a-helices and P-sheets) in dissolved biopolymers. Due to tire dissymmetry of tliese stmctures (containing chiral centres) tliey are biaxial and show circular birefringence. Circular dicliroism is tlie Kramers-Kronig transfonnation of tlie resulting optical rotatory dispersion. The spectral window useful for distinguishing between a-helices and so on lies in tlie region 200-250 nm and hence is masked by certain salts. The metliod as usually applied is only semi-quantitative, since tlie measured optical rotations also depend on tlie exact amino acid sequence. [Pg.2819]

The effects of dispersion and birefringence on stellar interferometry will be discussed in Sections 17.2.3 and 17.2.4. New kind of fibres has been design to manage the dispersion properties using a silica / air structure. These fibres, so called Photonic Crystal Fibres, are very promising for many applications (Peyrilloux et al., 2002). [Pg.292]

The first and third order terms in odd powers of the applied electric field are present for all materials. In the second order term, a polarization is induced proportional to the square of the applied electric field, and the. nonlinear second order optical susceptibility must, therefore, vanish in crystals that possess a center of symmetry. In addition to the noncentrosymmetric structure, efficient second harmonic generation requires crystals to possess propagation directions where the crystal birefringence cancels the natural dispersion leading to phase matching. [Pg.2]

One may wish to pursue the bulk phase-matched behavior beyond the noncritical (8=w/2, 8 defined below) case. In bulk samples birefringence is the usual means to overcome the natural dispersion... [Pg.119]

Birefringence induced by flow in liquids, solutions and dispersions of optically anisotropic, anisometric or deformable molecules or particles due to a non-random orientation of the molecules or particles. [Pg.57]
