2,2 -bipyridyl 1,10-phenanthroline

The NiCl2py4 complex reacts with trimethylsilylmethylmagnesium chloride in the presence of an excess of pyridine forming the air-unstable square planar complex [Ni(Me3SiCH2)2py2] from which the pyridine molecules are displaced by phosphines, 2,2 -bipyridyl, 1,10-phenanthroline and N,N,N, N -tetramethylethylenediamine.803... 

Combined with steric factors which inhibited tris coordination to divalent transition metals these features led to the virtually serendipitous discovery of the reagent biquinolyl (Hoste, 1938) specific for copper(I). The reactions of Re3X9 (X = Cl or Br) with 2,2 -bipyridyl, 1,10-phenanthroline and 2,2, 2"-terpy-ridyl in acetone produce dark purple insoluble solids whose properties are in accord with the stoichiometry (amineH)x Re3Cl9(amine), in which the formal oxidation state of the rhenium is + (3 - x). Cp2TiCl2 has been assessed as additive that controls polymer chain growth in the polymerization of methyl methacrylate.1224 Methyl methacrylate is easily polymerized in the photopolymerization with Cp2TiCl2 in a water-methanol mixture under irradiation of a 15 W fluorescent room lamp.
